RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim told the Financial Times on June 20 that Brazil will no longer play a proactive role in anything.

“Brazil totally gives up,”Amorim said. “I mean, what’s the point of even trying to do anything? Life is essentially meaningless, so why not do what you  want?”

Though tensions are simmering between Washington and Brasilia, there are indications that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is no longer brushing his teeth and refuses to wash his hands after going to the bathroom.

“From now on, Brazil will be exercising greater caution to avoid conveying the message that the people of Brazil care about anything, whether the issue be international in scope or merely a matter of personal hygiene,” da Silva said before farting really, really loud.

“I did that to demonstrate my total and complete apathy,” da Silva added.

I admit the joke is a bit esoteric. Brazil was, until quite recently, attempting to break out as a regional power challenging the US hegemony in the Americas, and they way they attempted to demonstrate their new, greater status was by breaking with the US and negotiating a uranium enrichment deal with Iran. However, within minutes of Brazil announcing the deal, the US completely embarrassed Brazil by ignoring the deal and announcing an agreement between the “major powers” to impose a 4th round of sanctions on Iran.

The photo is from the recent press conference – attended by virtually no reporters (a sure sign that Brazil’s attempt to demonstrate a greater world standing failed) announcing that Brazil had given up on and withdrawn from the uranium enrichment deal with Iran.

As I said, and esoteric joke at best, but one that is HILARIOUS is political science academic circles.
