ALL HAIL THE CAT EMPIRE

I spent the last few days in LA doing my attorney thing.  I thought I knew LA, but I learned on this trip that LA has changed in ways I never imagined possible.

I spent quality time with my old friend Paul Zimmelman, a jeweler, musician and Los Angeles enthusiast. We drove from his palatial home on the coast, down La Ciennega, past the LA oil fields (if you aren’t an Angeleno you’ve never seen or heard of them) and to a LA Metro station where we caught a train to downtown Los Angeles.

In my day – which was the 1970’s and 80’s – downtown Los Angeles was a vast wasteland of urban blight that resisted all attempts to cure.  Dirty streets deserted at night.

Not anymore.  It was a Thursday night, and I saw all kinds of people out and all kinds of restaurants and clubs populated by people having fun.  I couldn’t believe it.  LA felt like a real city with a vibrant night life – at last.

After dinner at an incredibly wonderful Mexican restaurant we took the train back to La Ciennega and, on the way back to Paul’s house, he played a CD of music from a Melbourne based band that calls itself The Cat Empire.

Amazing music.  Simply amazing.

They will be playing in Portland, Oregon in mid July.  I am seriously considering attending their concert.

“Wild Animals”

If you beat on the rock you can hear the world ring

Wake up in the morning you don’t feel a thing
Shadows gathering over your head
And it’s just like the preacher man said
He said we were born to run through the grass
Why are you living your life behind bars
Why are you living your life in the past
Give yourself a reason to sing

That you were free born you’re free born
You’re free born you’re free

Don’t let them kill the wild animals inside of you

It’s like in the movies when the rain comes down
And you take of your clothes and you
scream at the clouds
Can you remember the moment of birth
When you slipped out onto the earth
You’re a man you’re a woman
you’re not some machine
Why do you always stare at the screen
Why do you always bow your head down
I know you used to be proud

When you were free born you’re free born
You’re free born you’re free

Don’t let them kill the wild animals inside of you

Look out the tiny window frame that sits behind your desk
Past the big computer screen and the jars of fountain pens
What are you doing in this prison with your psychopathic boss
With your brokenhearted mornings and your
backstabbing friends

You were free born you’re free born
You’re free born you’re free

Don’t let them kill the wild animals inside of you

  1. Well thats is a much better experience of going back than the one in the movie Grosse Point Blank

Martin Q. Blank: [Leaving a message on Dr. Oatman’s machine] Dr. Oatman, please pick up, pick up! It’s Martin Blank! I, I’m standing where my, uh, living room was and it’s not here because my house is gone and it’s an Ultimart! You can never go home again, Oatman… but I guess you can shop there.

    Best lines in the movie:

    [Felix enters the school gym]

Arlene: Welcome back, Pointer! It’s Arlene Oslott-Joseph! And who might you be?

Felix La PuBelle: [glances at the badges on the table] It is I… [glances at the badges on the table]… Sidney Feldman.

A bit of Grosse Point Blank trivia: Felix was played by John Cusack’s kickboxing instructor, Benny Urquidez.
